Lens of Deficits
Instead of viewing autism through a lens of deficits, we should celebrate the beauty, strengths, talents, and distinctive perspectives that come with being on the spectrum. Many autistic people (including myself) excel in areas such as creative arts, technology, science, and more, thanks to their unique ways of thinking and processing information. By embracing and valuing these differences, we not only foster a more inclusive society but also unlock the potential for contributions that enrich our world.
What many don’t know is many autistic people put on masks to “blend in.” And many of those masks are put on during childhood. That is heartbreaking. Imagine having a child changing who they are, literally mimicking others, just so nobody knows their true identity. Nobody should feel they need to hide the person they are to “blend in” with everyone else. If you know someone with autism, embrace their differences. Let them stim. Love them for who they are. The world is a better place because of them, and they need to know that.
Just because we think differently than you, does not make us less than you.
Until you read again.
